Startup Inventor Showcase
The Translational Innovation Program program of the CCTS in partnership with the Corporate Engagement Office and Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Office of Technology Commercialization launched a new speaker series on January 13th 2020. The series features one inventor and one key resource from the innovation ecosystem each month. Inventors share stories of their successes, failures, struggles and rewards from building a startup.
The ongoing Monthly Speaker Series promotes an entrepreneurial mindset among clinicians, faculty, senior leaders, students and staff of The Ohio State University and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Since academic entrepreneurship is a team sport, the series will also provide a forum for networking with biomedical researchers and clinicians, various players in the life science startup ecosystem, startup executives, investors and other members from the entrepreneurial community at large.
Some of the goals of the new series are to showcase:
- Inventors from a variety of fields and their exemplary work at the intersection of academic achievement, science, technology, and business
- Entrepreneurship as an exciting pathway and outcome of university research to address the critical health, science and technology challenges of our time.
- Demystify and nurture an entrepreneurial mindset among our clinicians, faculty and students
- Introduce and bring together representatives from the various support services, resources, funding mechanisms, training and guidance available to inventors
- Mapping of the ecosystem with a featured service each month to help potential inventors understand, navigate and venture into the world of life science startups
The series takes place at The James (Wasserstrom Family Conference Room), from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. on the 2nd Monday of every month of the academic year.
A light breakfast will be provided and networking will begin at 7 a.m. and programming will begin at 7:30 a.m. There will be time for Q&A and networking following the speakers.

The inaugural speaker will be Subinoy Das, MD, FACS, FARS.
Speaker Bio:
Dr. Das is the former Director of The Ohio State University Sinus and Allergy Center and Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University. He is a recipient of a KL2 grant from the OSU Center for Clinical and Translational Science (UL1TR002733) and has received multiple awards as one of America's best doctors (top 5% of surgeons). His NIH-funded research was awarded the 2013 Fowler Award (top basic science research award in otolaryngology) for his work on detecting the cause of sinus infections.
His patents from this research were licensed to a medical device company and led to the development of Sinu-Test, a method for clinicians to rapidly distinguish between viral and bacterial sinus infections.
He is currently the Chief Medical Officer of Tivic Health, Inc, which has developed ClearUp, a handheld device that delivers microcurrents to the face to rapidly relieve headaches from allergic rhinitis. This device was the recipient of Time Magazine’s Top Inventions of 2019.
He is also a co-founder of Zotarix, LLC, a company that is developing devices to improve patient safety during pediatric surgery.
Dr. Das is also the CEO of the U.S. Institute for Advanced Sinus Care and Research where he sees patients with advanced sinus and rhinologic problems and can be reached at shu@usasinus.org.

Speaker Bio:
Christopher Breuer, M.D. is a Professor of Surgery at The Ohio State University. He serves as the Director of the Regenerative Medicine and as Director of Surgical Research at Nationwide Children's Hospital. Dr Breuer is a Board-certified Pediatric surgeon. He is a staff surgeon and member of the Division of Pediatric Surgery at Nationwide Children's Hospital. Dr. Breuer runs a NIH funded laboratory that focuses on cardiovascular tissue engineering.
His work is both basic and applied in nature. His basic science research is centered on investigating the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying neotissue formation in cardiovascular tissue-engineered constructs. His applied studies explore the use of tissue engineering technology for the development of improved vascular grafts and replacement heart valves for use in children.
Dr. Breuer served as the principal investigator on the first FDA-approved study evaluating the use of tissue-engineered vascular grafts in humans. This study is evaluating the safety and growth potential of tissue-engineered vascular graft in congenital heart surgery. He is currently beginning the next phase of this clinical trial. Dr. Breuer, in collaboration with Rev1 Ventures recently founded Lyst Therapeutics, a small start-up company focused on the development of a novel immunomodulatory called LystaMab which has important implications for both tissue engineering, congenital heart surgery and beyond.

Dr. Bailey is an entrepreneur and associate professor at The Ohio State University (OSU) College of Optometry. She was a recipient of a KL2 grant from the OSU Center for Clinical and Translational Science (UL1TR002733) and has received multiple awards for her commercialization activities, including The Ohio State University 2015 Early Career Innovator of the Year and winner of the 2014 Wexner Medical Center Big Ideas for Health Competition.
She has 19 US and international patents that have been issued for technologies that were developed at OSU. Two OSU startup companies have been created from her technologies. Sight4All, Inc., is developing a software application that measures multiple aspects of vision using a smart device, including autorefraction and eye alignment. Lentechs, LLC., is developing a line of novel contact lenses that includes a true no-line bifocal soft contact lens. Both companies are currently completing clinical trials needed to take the devices to market.
