SBIR/STTR Showcase

A partnership between The Ohio State University CCTS, G2G Consulting, BioOhio and Rev1 Ventures

The Translational Innovation Program of the CCTS in partnership with G2G ConsultingBioOhio and Rev1 Ventures presents a FREE Live Webinar featuring an Ohio-based bioscience company and the affiliated academic inventor who will share about one of the best sources of early-stage funding, the SBIR and STTR grant programs of the NIH and other government funding agencies.

We will also feature a representative from a federal agency to share about agency-specific SBIR/STTR programs.

Funded by NIH National Center for Advancing Translational Science (NCATS), the CCTS Translational Innovation Program aims to support the mandate from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and NCATS to move technology forward towards real world impact through entrepreneurship of research.

The CCTS Translational Innovation Program works closely with Ohio State’s Corporate Engagement Office and Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Office of Technology Commercialization along with a growing number of partners and co-supporterstowards our shared mission to optimize academic entrepreneurship. As a catalyst committed to develop and diversify the talent pipeline and to strengthen the entrepreneurial community, we strive to synergize and support the collective diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging efforts of The Ohio State University towards the elimination of systemic racism. We will intentionally invite, showcase, nurture and increase participation in innovation, commercialization and entrepreneurship by all people and seek to address underrepresentation among women, people of color, people with disabilities and socially or economically disadvantaged persons.

Successful funding of Phase 1 like the Small Businesses Innovation Research (SBIR) or the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grants does require well-developed and compelling preliminary studies, which aligns with the program goals of the CCTS pilot funding program. This program also aims to provide training and development of essential skills to translational scientists who have a desire to form their own company to develop their commercially viable research, which aligns with the program goals of the CCTS education program.

Some of the event goals are to:

  • Demystify and nurture an entrepreneurial mindset among our clinicians, faculty, staff and students.

  • Promote entrepreneurship as an exciting pathway and outcome of university research to address the critical health, science and technology challenges of our time, especially if there is near-term potential for commercialization through start-up creation or licensing.

  • Showcase founders and leaders of Ohio-based bioscience companies from a variety of fields and their exemplary work at the intersection of academic achievement, science, technology and business.

  • Demonstrate the formation of a campus spinout or startup company around a commercially viable invention and technology as a viable mechanism for technology transfer available to academic campus inventors. A spinout allows inventors to take ownership of the discoveries, remain actively involved in developing them as well as marketing and selling the products.

  • Highlight the significance of early stage funding and investments needed to support costs of additional research, design and process engineering to take innovations to market.

  • Showcase federally mandated funding programs like the Small Businesses Innovation Research (SBIR) and the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs which are needed to support and develop research which has the potential for commercialization. These grants help startup companies for de-risking especially of technical and process risks, to evaluate the market potential, and take ideas to the point where the private sector is ready to invest.

  • Learn first-hand from the experiences of the investigator-turned-entrepreneur about key lessons learned during the commercialization process with a focus on the SBIR/STTR application process and balancing of interests, time and responsibilities while collaborating with their academic institution or non-profit research institute.
