Behavioral methods play an important role in research on the health and development of children, adolescents and adults with congenital or acquired health challenges. The Biobehavioral Outcomes Core at Nationwide Children's Hospital will assist investigators who want to incorporate behavioral assessments in their research. These assessments can include a wide variety of methods and reporting sources to assess individual, interpersonal and social-ecological domains.

The Biospecimen Core Resource is a laboratory and biorepository within the Biopathology Center (BPC) at Nationwide Children's Hospital and is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Biorepository Accreditation Program (BAP).

The Biostatistics Core is committed to providing outstanding service to investigators at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The Biostatistics Core is committed to the Research Institute’s vision of supporting cutting-edge scientific research at the highest ethical standards.

This Core provides assistance to researchers in study design, data analysis, and interpretation of statistical results. For other services such as data entry, database design or data management services, this Core can provide advice on how to set up simple data management systems and provide a referral to the Research Bioinformatics Core if complex data management services are needed.

The Cell Line Core at Nationwide Children's Hospital processes human subject samples and provides the researcher with cell lines or DNA, appropriate for downstream applications in a variety of human and molecular genetic studies. Services include extraction of DNA from saliva or whole blood, creation of EBV transformed B-cell immortalized cell lines or fibroblast cell lines from skin biopsy samples and DNA or cell line archiving.

Clinical Research Services (CRS) at Nationwide Children's Hospital is designed to be a portal through which clinical investigators access streamlined coordination of services necessary to initiate clinical research projects, regardless of funding source. Nationwide Children's Hospital CRS supports all clinical research studies, providing staff and/or services to manage your study from beginning to end according to Good Clinical Practice and federal, state and institutional regulations and guidelines. Nationwide Children's Hospital CRS can also facilitate survey research, large data set analyses and psychometrics.

The Flow Cytometry Core Lab at The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital offers several platforms on which to do flow cytometry analysis and/or cell sorting, as well as the Nanosight NS300 for nanoparticle characterization and the Fluidigm C1 for single cell genetics studies.  In addition to training and support for independent investigator use of the cores instruments, the core also provides operator assisted services and consultation for the wide array of experiments available using flow cytometry technology.

Viral Vector Core

The Viral Vector Core at Nationwide Children's Hospital supplies recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV) vectors of superior quality to individual research laboratories. The Core is a full-service facility assisting with the design of AAV expression cassettes for optimum levels of gene expression in target tissues that enable investigators to transition seamlessly from the bench to the bedside. 

Good Manufacturing Practice

In 2009, Nationwide Children's Hospital established a current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) Production Facility, also known as the Clinical Manufacturing Facility (CMF). The CMF specializes in the production of recombinant Adeno-Associated viral vectors (rAAV) for use by faculty at Nationwide Children's Hospital, The Ohio State University Medical Center and external collaborators. The primary focus of the CMF is to provide researchers with the highest quality gene transfer vectors to support early phase clinical trials.

The Nationwide Children's Hospital Morphology Core Laboratory provides services in histology, electron microscopy and confocal and laser scanning microscopy.

The Nationwide Children's Hospital Biomedical Genomics Core (BGC) provides a complete solution for genomics research, from the initial steps of experimental design to the production of high quality, comprehensively analyzed data sets.

Advances in biomedical science place extreme demands on investigators for computational technology. Research Information Solutions at The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital is working to meet those demands with a comprehensive array of computational services including biostatistics, epidemiologic analysis, database design and technical support.
