Community Engagement Services
Community Engagement Services
The Community Engagement Program is dedicated to enhancing community health and reducing health disparities, particularly in the Appalachian region, through:
- Promotion of Researcher-Community Partnerships
- Promotion of Activities that Move Scientific Findings into the Community
- Promotion of Community Engagement in Research
Community engagement is “the process of working collaboratively with and through groups of people affiliated by geographic proximity, special interest, or similar situations to address issues affecting the well-being of those people” (CDC, 1997, http://www.cdc.gov/phppo/pce/). Building of trusting researcher-community relationships and attention to community needs and perspectives is important during community-engaged research and in all human subjects research.
Community Engagement Program activities include:
- Providing educational tools
- Awarding of competitive pilot grants
- Facilitation of researcher and community collaborations
- Partnership building as part of the Appalachian Translational Research Network (ATRN)
